Monument’s Joseph Hoefer spoke with Bloomberg Government about how the AI industry is interconnecting with politics in DC.
“Now that we’re moving beyond abstract policy discussions, the stakes are getting higher,” whether in national security, competitiveness, or consumer protection, said Joseph Hoefer, chief AI officer at Monument Advocacy where clients include Waymo.
He said the AI policy ecosystem in Washington has to adapt to fast-moving debates.
The political campaign activity was “inevitable,” Hoefer said. “This isn’t just about engaging on policy anymore, it’s about building political infrastructure,” he said. “The in-house hires help shape the conversation in real time, while the PAC activity helps shape who’s in the room next Congress. It also reflects a broader shift where AI is starting to normalize as a political issue, not just a technical or regulatory one. And all of this is happening ahead of what could be the most active legislative window on AI to date, so companies are positioning early,”
